Genuine Dominican Amber Fossil
Coleoptera Ripiphoridae (Wedge-Shaped Beetle) along with Tumbling Flower Beetle (Coleoptera Mordellidae)
Body of Ripiphoridae is soft, pubescent, broadly wedge shaped. Most species have short elytra exposing most of the abdomen and the large wings unfolded.
Eyes are large, protruding from the head. Antennae 10 or 11 segmented, biflabellate in males, pectinate in females.
Females of some species are larviform and wingless. Life span of adults is very short (1-2 days). They occur on flower, where females, after mating, lay eggs. Ripiphorids are parasitoids of wasps and bees. Body of Mordellidae is pubescent, cuneiform and humpbacked, head is bent down.
Antennae threadlike, sawtoothed or clubbed. Abdomen extends beyond elytra with last segment forming a pointed tail.
Adults occur on flowers, where they feed on pollen.
