Whip spiders (Arachnida: Amblypygi)
Whip spiders (Arachnida: Amblypygi), earlier known as Tailless whip scorpions, are distinctive creatures with a long, slender, antenniform first pair of legs. These whip-like appendages, much longer than the body, give the group its common name. Due to their highly modified sensory first pair of legs, whip spiders have to walk using only three pairs of legs. They possess a characteristic highly flattened body with a solid carapace and a segmented abdomen, allowing them to crawl into narrow spaces under rocks or tree bark. Whip spiders have spined, raptorial pedipalps modified for grabbing and retaining prey.
Amblypygi are very rare in Dominican Amber. This incredible amber piece is the first that contains two complete, beautifully preserved Whip spiders.
